Rains May Impact Early Salinas Veg Deal


  

Vegetable prices for the Brawley-El Centro-Yuma district have plunged to normal levels, according to Chris Reade, vice president of the Salinas-based sales and marketing agency, Produce West. On Jan. 10, he said most Yuma vegetable items were selling in the $10 to $20 range. A month prior to that, some vegetables were priced at $75 to $100 per case. Strawberry demand remains strong, and California growers may not be able to keep up with it thanks to recent weather problems. In an October 25 crop report, Markon Cooperative BB #:123315 said its inspectors predict lower-than-normal volume through November, which will keep prices high.
